Today the Huber brothers, Alexander and Thomas, broke the speed record for The Nose route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. El Capitan is the huge formation on the left side of the image at the top of this blog page. They climbed the route — all 31 pitches and 2900 feet of it — in 2:45:45.
To put this in perspective, the first ascent of the route, done by Warren Harding in 1958, took 47 days. Even today, an average climbing party takes 5 days to climb the route. The Hubers climbed the route and hiked back down in time for lunch.
