Gardner on Kerplunk
Megan and the girls are out of town, so I took the opportunity to head to the Wichitas for some climbing. I was joined by Gardner, who I recently met through the Texas Mountaineers. Since my last visit to the Wichitas, Oklahoma got hammered by the biggest snowstorm on record. I was amazed at the damage it did to the Wildlife Refuge. Thousands of trees and large branches were knocked down and the trails in the Narrows were decimated. What used to be easy hiking on well-maintained climbers’ trails is now bushwhacking. In many places you can’t even tell where the trail used to be.
But that didn’t keep us from getting a full day of climbing in. Here’s our tick list:
- The Dihedral
- Dr. Coolhead (TR)
- Captain Crunch
- Fantasy Roof
- Sundown Dihedral
For having less than 2 years of climbing under his belt, Gardner is a very strong and efficient partner. It looks like we’ll be climbing together at Red Rocks in April. Here’s a few more pics from the day:
Leaning Tower. If you look closely you can see a climber on Lycra Sheath.
Lichen Wall. Kerplunk is the light-colored ramp running
up the left side of the formation.
